Participant Study Eligibility

You may participate in this study if you are: 

• 18 years of age or older. 

• able to read, speak, and understand English. 

• report smoking at least 5 cigarettes per day for the past 6 months. 

• willing to set a quit date within the next 30 days. 

• own a cell phone. 

• willing and able to use nicotine replacement therapy in the form of patch or lozenge. 

• willing to discontinue the use of any other smoking cessation pharmacotherapy (such as nicotine replacement therapy in the form of gum or patch, or medications such as Wellbutrin or Chantix used specifically to stop smoking and not mood stabilization). 

• NOT pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the next 6 months. 

You cannot participate in this study if you do not meet all the requirements above. Other things that would prohibit you from participating in this study are: 

• if you are a pregnant woman, individuals who are breastfeeding, or individuals who are planning to become pregnant during the next 6 months. 

• if you have a medical condition or prescription that is not supposed to be taken if you plan to also take nicotine replacement therapy medications, including: 

• having had a heart attack or stroke within the past 30 days. 

• having serious or worsening angina within the past 6 months. 

• having a very rapid or irregular heartbeat that requires taking medication to stabilize – these medications may be prescribed for this condition: sodium/potassium/calcium channel blockers, or beta blockers. (You may ask your pharmacist if you are unsure if you are prescribed any of these medications).
